In October of 2011, representatives from Project 4 Walls and Ciudad Hermana visited Hilton High School to speak to the students about humanitarian projects taking place in and around El Sauce, Nicaragua. Bonnie Yannie, Tim McMahon, and Martha Rojas spoke with students in the International Baccalaureate Spanish and French classes as well as to members of the Hilton High School International Club. Both the students and staff of Hilton went away from the presentation with a strong desire to help make a difference in Nicaragua.
A few months after the visit, Hilton High School Principal, Brian Bartalo, organized a drive to collect school supplies. Hilton students filled numerous boxes with school supplies to be sent to the children in the schools of El Sauce. Soon after, a Hilton graduate, Ashley Sullivan, decided to travel to Nicaragua to work with the people of El Sauce. Ashley’s presence there has made the bond between Hilton and El Sauce even stronger.
After spending time with Ashley during her trip back to the United States this past summer, Michele Ariola, International Baccalaureate Spanish teacher and International Club advisor at Hilton High School, began to plan several fundraisers. The goal is to raise approximately $6,000 to support Project 4 Walls as well as fund the building of a preschool in San Fernando. Michele and her family plan to take a group of students to El Sauce to build a home through Project 4 Walls in August, 2013.
